In a recent announcement by Chargé d’Affaires Karen Decker on March 1, the U.S. Embassy in Kabul expressed its honor in inaugurating the Afghan Alumni Engagement (AAE) program through the American Councils for International Education. To foster connections, collaboration, and contributions, the program brings together more than 100 Afghan alumni from diverse backgrounds, reflecting the rich tapestry of former government officials, civil society leaders, private sector professionals, students, and emerging influencers who have participated in various exchange programs.
The AAE initiative is made possible through funding from the Public Diplomacy Section (PDS) of the U.S. Department of State, Mission to Afghanistan. This program serves as a testament to the commitment of the United States to support the educational and professional growth of Afghan alumni, acknowledging their potential to shape the future of Afghanistan.
The primary objective of Afghan Alumni Engagement is to facilitate connections among Afghan alumni and foster networks with their counterparts in the United States, Central and South Asia, and beyond. With a network that exceeds 7,000 alumni, participants come from a myriad of programs, including but not limited to Fulbright, the International Visitor Leadership Program, academic exchanges, university scholarships, English language and youth leadership initiatives.
This network is a powerhouse of diversity, representing individuals with a wealth of experience, ranging from seasoned leaders in government and civil society to the vibrant energy of youth and students who hold the potential to influence the trajectory of Afghanistan’s development.
American Councils: A Legacy of Educational Excellence
For over 18 years, American Councils have played a pivotal role in organizing educational and professional programs for Afghans who aspire to bring about positive changes globally. Notable recent programs include the Leadership and English Advancement Program (LEAP) and the Afghanistan University Student Exchange Program/United States English Teaching Program (AUSEP/USET). With approximately 1,500 Afghan alumni benefitting from these initiatives, American Councils continues to be a leading force in promoting education and fostering connections among Afghanistan’s emerging leaders.
Looking Ahead
The Afghan Alumni Engagement program stands as a beacon of hope and collaboration in the face of challenging times. As Afghanistan navigates its path toward a brighter future, the connections forged through this program will undoubtedly play a crucial role in shaping the nation’s destiny. The commitment expressed by the U.S. Embassy and American Councils reflects a shared belief in the potential of Afghan alumni to contribute significantly to the development and progress of their homeland. Through collaboration, communication, and collective efforts, the Afghan Alumni Engagement program seeks to build bridges and create a foundation for lasting positive change in Afghanistan.
