Reports from Kabul and surrounding areas reveal disturbing practices in Taliban-run detention centers, where detainees are forced to pay for their own food. Families of those detained are being coerced into depositing $200 to cover basic necessities for their relatives, as the Taliban fails to provide adequate food or supplies.
This shocking practice has placed an additional financial burden on families already struggling under Afghanistan’s collapsing economy. The arrests and detentions of civilians have surged in recent months, with many families reporting arbitrary or baseless accusations leading to imprisonment.
A resident of Kabul described their experience:
“My cousin was detained for a minor issue, and we were told to deposit $200 for his survival. The Taliban officials said they don’t have the resources to feed prisoners and that families must bear the cost. We are struggling to gather the money.”
Sources from @nsa_afg also revealed that the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) provides $30 per detainee per day to the Taliban after the first 24 hours of custody. However, this payment appears insufficient to meet even the most basic needs of prisoners, leaving families to shoulder the burden.
The situation has drawn condemnation from human rights organizations, which describe the Taliban’s detention policies as blatant violations of international law. Critics have also questioned UNAMA’s role, suggesting that its payments may inadvertently enable these abusive practices. Despite growing outrage, UNAMA has not released a statement addressing its involvement or the allegations surrounding the misuse of its funds.
This issue highlights the worsening humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan under Taliban rule, where civilians live in constant fear of arbitrary arrest, and families are driven deeper into poverty.
International organizations and foreign governments are being urged to take immediate action to address these violations. The exploitation of detainees and their families underscores the urgent need for humanitarian intervention and accountability.
