An Afghan woman contacted Kauser News Agency from Kabul to share her story about her *estranged husband, who is a former pilot in the Afghan Army and currently living in Pennsylvania, USA.
The woman, who has asked to remain anonymous, said that she was married to him for 18 years and had a son together. However, four years ago, he married a second wife and began to kick her and their son out of the house. *She provided and handed over all the necessary documents to the Kauser News Agency to Confirm he is her Husband*
The woman said that she was able to stay in the house because the Taliban found out about her situation and gave her a job and paid for her son’s university fees. However, her husband has been trying to contact her and pressure her to sell the house and pay him $4,000 in order to start the documentation process for their son to be evacuated to the United States. The woman said that she believes that he is trying to extort money from her and that he is not actually interested in helping their son get to the United States. She has provided all of her documentation and proof to Kauser News Agency.
The Afghan Adjustment Act (AAA) is a proposed bill that would provide a pathway to permanent residency for Afghans who were evacuated to the United States after the Taliban takeover in 2021. The bill has been met with mixed reactions, with some people arguing that it is necessary to help Afghans who have been displaced by the war, while others have expressed concerns about the potential for abuse.
This case raises some of these concerns. If the AAA is passed, it is possible that other Afghans who have committed domestic crimes or other human rights abuses could also be eligible for permanent residency. This is a serious issue, and it is important to ensure that the AAA is carefully designed to prevent this from happening.
Kauser News Agency attempted to contact the husband; however, his phone is off and he is not answering WhatsApp suggesting that he may be avoiding contact with Kauser News Agency. This could be because he is aware of the allegations against him and does not want to answer questions about them.
Kauser News Agency is committed to telling the stories of Afghan women and girls. We believe that their voices are essential to understanding the challenges and opportunities facing Afghanistan today. We are grateful to this woman for sharing her story with us.
*To protect this woman’s privacy, Kauser News Agency chose not to publish her ex-husband’s name in this article, however, it will be provided to official channels upon request.
