The Taliban’s return to power has led to increased uncertainty and insecurity in the country. Many Afghan citizens, fearing for their safety and future, have chosen to leave their homeland and seek refuge in other countries, including in Europe.
The decision to leave one’s home and embark on a dangerous journey is often driven by a combination of factors, such as political instability, threats to personal safety, economic hardship, and limited opportunities for a decent livelihood. Afghan citizens who have decided to migrate to Europe are often seeking protection and a chance for a better life for themselves and their families.
the journey to Europe is often perilous and fraught with risks. Many Afghan migrants undertake dangerous routes, including crossing borders illegally, relying on human smugglers, and traveling in overcrowded boats or trucks. These journeys can result in tragic accidents, exploitation, and even loss of life.
European countries have responded to the influx of Afghan migrants in different ways. Some have implemented stricter border controls, while others have established asylum procedures to assess individual cases and provide protection to those in need. The response varies across countries and is influenced by their respective immigration policies and capacities to handle refugee and migrant populations.
According to UNHCR Report on 18 February 2023 ”SOFIA – UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, the International Organization for Migration (IOM), and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) are shocked and deeply saddened after 18 people – reportedly Afghans – including one child, were discovered dead on 17 February in an abandoned truck near Bulgaria’s capital Sofia.”
