According to reports from family members of some Afghan immigrants who reached out to Kauser News, the individuals on the boat were attempting to reach a European country without visas. The ages of the detainees have not been verified, but multiple reports indicate that there were 25 people on the boat which was provided and piloted by human traffickers. A Turkish government official who requested anonymity confirmed the operation conducted by the Turkish Coast Guard, which started on May 17, 2023, and resulted in the detention of the immigrants. However, the official did not disclose the nationality or ages of the detainees.
