Pakistani Ambassador Masood Khan expressed the urgent need for modern American weapons to effectively combat the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). The TTP, reportedly utilizing American weapons left in Afghanistan by U.S. forces, poses a significant threat to Pakistan’s military forces. The pressing question is whether the United States will consider providing additional military equipment to support Pakistani security forces in this ongoing conflict.
U.S. and Pakistan’s Shared Security Interests
In response to this inquiry, MR MILLER highlighted the strong collaborative relationship between the United States and Pakistan in addressing regional security threats. He emphasized that both nations have a mutual interest in combating terrorism and maintaining stability in the region. This partnership is facilitated through high-level counterterrorism dialogues and various capacity-building programs aimed at enhancing Pakistan’s ability to counter terrorist threats.
“We partner with Pakistan on security through our high-level counterterrorism dialogue, including several counterterrorism capacity-building programs, and we support a series of U.S.-Pakistan military-to-military engagements,” MR MILLER stated. He further noted that the United States maintains regular communication with Pakistani leaders to discuss and address these critical security issues.
Regular Military-to-Military Engagements
The U.S. commitment to supporting Pakistan in its fight against terrorism extends to a series of military-to-military engagements. These engagements are part of the broader strategy to strengthen Pakistan’s counterterrorism capabilities and ensure regional security. MR MILLER reaffirmed the U.S. dedication to this partnership, indicating that discussions on regional security, including counterterrorism efforts, will continue through the annual counterterrorism dialogue and other bilateral consultations.
U.S. Vigilance Against Terrorist Threats
The conversation also touched upon a report from FBI and military officials, as well as a former CIA chief, warning of a serious threat of a terrorist attack in the United States in the coming months. When asked for comments, MR MILLER confirmed awareness of the report and reiterated the U.S. government’s commitment to counterterrorism.
“I have seen that report and I’ll say that we obviously take counterterrorism matters very seriously,” MR MILLER remarked. He emphasized the comprehensive efforts across national security and law enforcement agencies to detect, disrupt, and hold accountable those involved in terrorism plots. This inter-agency collaboration is crucial in safeguarding the nation against potential threats.
