Afghanistan is facing another severe deterioration in food security, with the United Nations World Food Programme warning that nearly 19 million people could face acute hunger in the coming months, according to an Associated Press report published October 15.
WFP’s Afghanistan country director, John Aylieff, told AP that 5.3 million women and children may need treatment for acute malnutrition in the coming year. The agency says funding has fallen sharply compared with 2022, forcing clinics to turn away many patients who need nutritional support.
The pressures include rising staple-food prices, drought, limited household incomes, return migration and disrupted trade. The World Health Organization has separately documented the strain on Afghanistan’s health system. Humanitarian agencies are calling for additional funding before conditions worsen.
