The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan said it confirmed at least 10 civilian deaths, most of them children, and nine injuries from airstrikes in Kunar and Helmand provinces on October 1.
Pakistan said the strikes targeted militant hideouts and claimed to have killed 22 militants. Afghan Taliban officials reported civilian casualties and condemned the operation. Those competing claims have not all been independently verified, and the UN’s documented civilian toll is distinct from either government’s account.
UNAMA said it had recorded more than 1,100 civilian deaths and injuries from cross-border armed violence in Afghanistan so far in 2026 as of its October 1 statement. The mission urged de-escalation, dialogue and protection of civilians under international law.
